What Can a Junk Removal Company Take? A Guide for Raleigh and Wake County Homeowners
By White Oak Junk Removal

Before you call anyone, it’s reasonable to wonder whether a junk removal company will actually take what you have. The short answer for most Raleigh and Wake County homeowners is yes: if it’s ordinary household stuff and it isn’t hazardous, a junk removal crew can usually load it. This guide covers what we take, what needs special handling, what we can’t accept, and what to tell the crew so your estimate is accurate.
A quick note on how to read this: when we say “we take it,” that’s what White Oak Junk Removal handles. Where something depends on local rules or varies between companies, we say so.
Furniture and household items
This is the bulk of what we haul. We take couches, sectionals and loveseats, recliners and chairs, mattresses and box springs, beds and bed frames, dressers, tables, desks, bookcases, and office and patio furniture. We also take the everyday clutter that fills closets and spare rooms: boxes, bags, lamps, rugs, toys, exercise equipment, and anything else that’s simply in the way.
You don’t need to carry anything to the curb. The crew lifts and loads from wherever it sits, whether that’s an upstairs bedroom, a basement or the back of a closet. See furniture removal for more on bigger pieces.
Appliances
We remove refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers and water heaters from kitchens, laundry rooms, basements and garages. Metal is recycled where it’s practical.
One thing we need from you: have the water, gas and power shut off and the appliance disconnected before the crew arrives. If a gas line or plumbing connection needs work, that’s a job for a plumber or appliance installer. Once it’s disconnected, we handle the rest. More on appliance removal.
Yard debris and brush
Branches, brush piles, storm-downed limbs, bagged leaves and the leftovers from a landscaping project can all go. You don’t need to bundle or bag everything first. We load it from where it sits. Other junk, like an old grill or a broken patio set, can go on the same truck. Very large trees still standing, or anything that needs a tree service to cut down, are a separate job. We haul the debris, not the tree work.
Construction and renovation debris
After a remodel, we haul drywall, lumber, flooring, carpet, cabinets, countertops, tile and mixed jobsite debris. That works for homeowners who did a project themselves and for contractors who want the pile gone before the next trade. Very heavy material such as large amounts of concrete, brick or dirt changes the load considerably, so mention it when you ask for an estimate. See construction debris removal.
Garage, attic and storage clutter
Garages, attics, basements and storage units are where most of our full cleanouts happen. Old furniture, broken tools, bikes, lawn equipment, shelving, holiday decorations and years of boxes can all go. Point out what stays. You don’t need to sort the rest first.
Items that may need special handling
Some things we can usually take, but we need to know about them ahead of time:
- Electronics. TVs, computers, monitors and printers are hauled and recycled where possible.
- Hot tubs, playsets and sheds. These have to be taken apart first, which is part of our light demolition work.
- Very heavy items. Pianos, gun safes and large exercise machines take extra planning, and some may not be possible depending on access.
- Tires and items with fuel. Lawn mowers, pressure washers and other gas-powered equipment should have the fuel drained. Ask us about tires before booking.
Materials a junk removal company may not be able to accept
We can’t accept hazardous materials. That includes paint, solvents, chemicals and fuel. These need to go to a household hazardous waste collection site. Wake County and Johnston County both run collection programs for residents, so check your county’s solid waste pages for current locations and hours.
Across the industry, most junk removal companies also turn down items like propane tanks, asbestos-containing materials, medical waste and anything with unknown contents. Rules vary from company to company and depend on where the material can legally be taken. If you aren’t sure about something, ask before the truck arrives rather than finding out on the day.
What to tell the crew before booking
The more we know up front, the more accurate your price will be. When you call, text or send the form, include:
- What’s going. A rough list or a few photos from different angles.
- Where it is. Curbside, garage, upstairs, basement, attic or backyard.
- Access details. Stairs, narrow halls, gate codes, elevator rules or HOA restrictions.
- Anything unusual. Heavy items, appliances, or anything that might be hazardous.
- Your timeline. A closing date, a move-out, a delivery of new furniture.
How to get an accurate free estimate
Every job starts with a free estimate. We look at what needs to go and give you an upfront price before any work begins, with no hidden fees added later. Once you approve it, the crew does all the lifting and loading, donates and recycles what we reasonably can, and sweeps up before leaving. Same-day service is often available when the schedule allows.
We’re based in Garner and work across Raleigh and the rest of Wake County, plus nearby Johnston County towns like Clayton. If you’ve been putting off a cleanout because you weren’t sure what could go, the easiest next step is to ask.
Not sure if we can take it? Just ask
